Proposed changes have been made to the policy governing waste collection services on Kangaroo Island. The cost of sending waste to landfill is continually rising. These changes are aimed at reducing waste going to landfill, while promoting re-use, recycling and a healthier environment.
Council is consulting with the Community about a new fortnightly kerbside schedule for domestic general waste, recycling and green organics (where applicable in townships).
The proposed changes are highlighted in yellow in the Fleurieu Regional Waste Authority (FRWA) Kerbside Collection Policy (the Policy). They have been recommended by FRWA and are endorsed by Council. (Please note, only the yellow highlighted sections of the Policy are the subject of this Community consultation).
Council has asked FRWA to assist in conducting a 56-day Community consultation process on the proposed changes, including how the proposed changes will be implemented.
Feedback from the extended consultation period will be brought back to Council for consideration prior to Council adopting the Policy, or otherwise.
Times for the transition
If the Policy is adopted at the March 2017 Council meeting the new service is scheduled to commence in September 2017, with the roll out beginning prior to that. If the Policy is not adopted in March, the Policy and timelines will be revised.
Hard copies of the Policy are available from Council's Customer Service Centre in Kingscote, and the Penneshaw Community Business Centre.
FRWA will conduct four 90 minute Information Sessions, including Q&As, from 6.00pm to 7.30pm at:
Information, compost bins and worm farms will be on display. All attendees will receive a free kitchen caddy and roll of compostible bags at these sessions.
FRWA will keep a record of all questions and will update the FAQs on the website after each session as something new is raised.
Drop In Sessions
FRWA will run daily drop in sessions at Kingscote Town Hall in Dauncey Street, Kingscote, between 9.00am and 2.00pm, from Tuesday 31 January to Thursday 2 February 2017.
