Background to the Upgrade

Airport from the air
Kangaroo Island Airport from the air

The upgrade of the Kangaroo Island Airport commenced in 2012 with a review of options. Four options were considered:

  1. To do nothing and maintain status quo: reseal runway and apron surfaces and install new landing lighting and apron lights.
    Estimated cost $2.5million
  2. Small increase in size to allow for modern 50 seat aircraft to land and operation.
    Estimated cost $9 million
  3. Increase in size to meet specification for 100-120 seat regional jets to land
    Estimated cost $18 million
  4. Increase in size to allow narrow body intercity jets to land (largest reasonable upgrade)
    Estimated cost $37 million

It was determined that an upgrade to cater for regional jets (option3) would effectively provision for the future, meeting the demands of tourism growth with frequency of service of smaller planes being better for tourism and general use. It is noted that larger aircraft could also utilize these facilities on a concessional basis.

A detailed business case was developed in 2013-2015. In mid- 2015, Council submitted an application to the Commonwealth Government’s National Stronger Regions Fund for $9 million with a commitment from State Government to match-fund with  $9 million for a total project cost of $18 million

In December 2015, Council were informed that they had been successful with their application and full design planning commenced in February 2016.
