Media Release: Message from Mayor Michael Pengilly and Council for Easter

9th April 2020

The past 4 months have moved so quickly it is difficult to believe Easter is upon us albeit in a very different form to normal.

The catastrophic fires of summer and the current COVID-19 crisis are testing KI and its people in a way they never have been in my lifetime. There is no text book and everyone is finding it challenging to go about their lives with some degree of normalcy.

The fire grounds recovery is continuing unabated and is the prime focus of so many people. Getting things back into order will take months and years - rebuilding homes and farms and tourism businesses  is vital and having adequate shelter for some before winter, most urgent.

The Mayoral Bushfire Fund peaked at just over $5 million.  Over $2 million has been paid out so far and that process continues. Such generosity from everywhere has been humbling.

A concerted effort to promote non visitation across the country, State and especially KI from the 3 levels of government, especially over the holiday period, seems to be working. Stay home and stay safe .

The fires and virus have devastated many businesses so please shop locally to help them out - via their online sites if necessary so they can keep going and keep jobs in place as much as possible. And many places are doing takeaway meals for the first time, so try them out - Jan and I have been doing just that for something different. Good on them!

Look after each other especially our senior citizens and let’s come out the other side of this current situation in as good a shape as possible.  Have a safe and happy family Easter.
