Kangaroo Island Council Developing New Strategic Plan: A Blueprint for the Future
Kangaroo Island Council is excited to share the development of its 10-year 2024-2034 Community Strategic Plan, setting a new standard for transparency and sustainability. Chief Executive Officer Daryl Buckingham highlights the importance of this plan in transforming the council's operations and governance.
"Our mission is to keep rates as low as possible, ensure sustainable council and community infrastructure, and remain community-led," said Mr. Buckingham. "This marks a significant step towards transparent governance, shifting from a solvency model to a sustainable model, aligning our strategies with the long-term vision of our community."
Community Engagement and Participation
The council is actively involving the community in shaping the future. Community members have already attended seven sessions around Kangaroo Island from July 23-29 and can still provide input until Friday, August 9 by visiting https://www.kangarooisland.sa.gov.au/forms/ip-and-r-towards-2034 to fill in our online survey or alternatively grab a hard copy from the Penneshaw Community Business Centre or the Kingscote office. The valuable insights gathered will inform the final strategic plan, guiding a four-year delivery program and annual business plans.
The plan focuses on five key pillars:
- Infrastructure: Enhancing infrastructure to support growth while maintaining sustainability and affordability.
- Community: Empowering local communities through inclusive initiatives and equitable service delivery.
- Economy: Supporting local businesses, tourism, and diverse employment opportunities.
- Environment: Preserving and enhancing natural beauty and biodiversity through sustainable practices.
- Organisation: Providing effective governance and leadership to ensure efficient service delivery and meet community expectations.
Moving Forward
This strategic plan is part of a broader, integrated planning and reporting (IP&R) framework, making Kangaroo Island Council the first in South Australia to implement such a comprehensive approach. It represents the council’s commitment to a transparent, sustainable, and community-led future.
