Community-led road naming celebrates Kangaroo Island's history and environment

The invaluable community feedback on previously unnamed roads will now make elements of Kangaroo Island's history and environment more prominently featured in road names.

"Council received requests to allocate names to some previously unnamed roads," Kangaroo Island Mayor Michael Pengilly said.

"The consultation for naming the unnamed road ran from Tuesday, 31 October 2023, until Thursday, 23 November 2023, to provide the Community with the opportunity to suggest names for the identified roads," he said.

"We thank everyone who took part in the consultation."

Following community feedback at the Council Meeting on 13 February 2024, the following made the following decisions on the unnamed roads under Section 219(1) of the Local Government Act 1999, effective from 1 March 2024:

  1. To assign the name "Dashwood Track" to the currently unnamed government road in the Hundred of Cassini (H110100P2) intersecting with North Coast Road between lots 150 and 151. It provides access to four properties and is shown on the map below. The track leads to Dashwood Bay and is colloquially known as Dashwood Track.

  2. To assign the name "Ritchie Terrace" to the currently unnamed government road in the Town Plan of Vivonne (H110900P48), located in the same road reserve as Jetty Road and intersecting with Jetty Road and between lots 18 and 31 and is shown on the map below. The name “Ritchie” is named after Sir George Ritchie KCMG, a South Australian politician

  4. To assign the name "Tinline Track" to the currently unnamed government road described as lot 307 Public Road in Deposited Plan 46996, which intersects with D'Estrees Bay Road and is located between lots 301 and 302 and is shown on the map below. The new name reflects the track’s location nearby Point Tinline.

  5. To assign the name "Ellen Track" to the currently unnamed government road in Deposited Plan 3744, which intersects with South Coast Road and is located between lots 105 and 106 and is shown on the map below. The new name reflects the track’s location nearby Mount Ellen nearby.

To assign the name "Tiggemann Track" to the currently unnamed government road in Hundred of Menzies (H110800P20) between lots 6 and 138 on Links Road and Lots 11 and 137 on Samphire Road and is shown on the map below. August and Jane Tiggemann and their 11 children lived in Brownlow. They were a KI pioneering family but have never had any recognition of a road, reserve or any other location named after them.

  7. To assign the name "Sanctuary Track" to the currently unnamed government road in the Hundred of Dudley (H110200P52) intersecting with Ratcliff Track and between lots 404 and 406 and is shown on the map below. The track is named after nearby Pelican Lagoon Marine Sanctuary.

  9. To assign the name "Northcott Road" to the currently unnamed government road in Hundred of Menzies (H110800P4) intersecting with Hog Bay Road and located between lots 13 and 455 and is shown on the map below. The road’s new name pays homage to Tom Northcott who owned and developed the farm adjacent and south of the road after he and his wife Jane with their three sons emigrated to Kangaroo Island from England in 1866.

  11. To assign the name "Encounter Track" to the currently unnamed government road in Hundred of Dudley (H110200P38) and Deposited Plan 83049 intersecting with Cape Willoughby Road and located between lots 1 and 2 and is shown on the map below. The track is named after Encounter Marine Park located to the north of the track.

  13. To assign the name "Tammar Track" to the currently unnamed government road in Deposited Plan 71647 and Filed Plans 214727, 214999 and 214726, located within the same road reserve as Hog Bay Road and intersecting with Hog Bay Road at lot 101: and is shown on the map below. The track’s is named after Kangaroo Island native fauna, the Tammar Wallaby. It is understood that Kangaroo Island has the largest remaining natural population of Tammar Wallabies in Australia.
