The Kangaroo Island Airport Visible Solar Project was Commissioned in November, 2013
The 4 dual-axis Solar Photovoltaic (PV) tracking system was installed by Ingenero Pty Ltd as part of a $500,000 project funded by RenewablesSA (Department for Manufacturing, Innovation, Trade, Resources and Energy) and implemented by:-
- Regional Development Australia, Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island
- Kangaroo Island Council
- Ingenero Pty Ltd
- Nissan Fleet
- Peak Capacity: 50kW
- Panels: Trina 250W Polycrystalline
- Inverters: Power-One Aurora
- Mounting: MecaSolar Dual-Axis trackers
- Annual Output: 100,000kWh
The solar array tracks the sun throughout the day increasing annual output by more than 30% compared to a fixed north facing solar PV system. This system produces more than 100,000kWh each year – enough to power more than 13 average homes.
The output of the system offsets the electrical consumption of the Airport, and in combination with an additional 14kW Solar PV system at the Council Chambers in Kingscote, also supports the charging of 3 emission-free Electric Vehicles on Kangaroo Island.
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles can be hired on the Island through Budget Kangaroo Island Car Hire.
Please contact: Chad Wyatt, Budget Kangaroo Island on 08 8553 3133 for bookings.
Where do we charge the vehicles?
The Electric Vehicles can be charged at charge points located at the Airport, Kingscote (Council car park), Penneshaw (adjacent Community Business Centre), American River (camping ground adjacent to entry to boat ramp) and Parndana (adjacent Parndana Town Hall). Please refer to map at the bottom of this page. The Electric Vehicles can also be charged using a normal household power socket where you are staying if you enquire with the accommodation provider.
For further information please see KI Council Solar Brochure
What is the cost?
Electricity is charged through Chargepoint network of chargers with a minimum connection fee of $2.80 and then per kWh until a maximum of $16.85 is reached (usually after 8 hours of charge). You will need a Chargepoint card to be able to activate the Chargepoint - these are supplied with your hire car keys from Budget KI and if you are visiting then you can obtain one fre-of-charge from Kangaroo Island Council Offices, 43 Dauncey Street, Kingscote (Monday to Friday during office hours). Alternatively, you can order one free-of-charge from Chargepoint before you visit. These "swipe" cards need to be linked to your credit card, pre-paid and then they can be set to automatically recharge.
How to charge a vehicle?
Each Electric Vehicle will have a ‘charge card’ for use at a charge point – please follow the prompts on the charge points and refer to information sheets in each vehicle – for further assistance with your hire car please contact Budget Kangaroo Island or Charge Point direct on 1300 300 885.
For the general public who may wish to use a charge point for their own car - they will need to contact Charge Point on 1300 300 885 to arrange for a ‘charge card’ to use a charge point – the cost is as follows:
- A minimum connection charge of $2.80 applies and then per kWh taken after that to a maximum charge of $16.85 inc GST
Plan your trip
Please plan your trip carefully – Plug-in Hybrid cars available for hire on Island have an effective (fuel and battery) range of over 400km. Petrol may be purchased in Penneshaw and Kingscote 24/4 through automated credit card pumps. Fuel supply in the west of the Island is limited and not open all the time. You should always try to pick up a top-up charge at your stops during the day where you can for the battery and can recharge overnight fully at most accomodation points if you enquire in advance to confirm.
Incidents relating to the plug-in hybrid cars hired from Budget KI should be referred to them for action and advice - 08 8553 3133.
