The Public Interest Disclosure Act 2018 enables individuals to report public interest information to specified persons or authorities. The Act recognises two categories of public interest information:
- Environmental and health information — concerning a substantial risk to the environment or to public health and safety.
- Public administration information — relating to suspected corruption, misconduct, or maladministration within public administration.
Any person may disclose environmental or health information. However, only public officers are permitted to disclose public administration information.

Public Interest Disclosure Procedure
The South Australian Government introduced the Public Interest Disclosure Act 2018 (PID Act) following recommendations made by the Independent Commissioner Against Corruption in a 2014 review of the former legislative framework. The PID Act commenced on 1 July 2019, replacing the Whistleblowers Protection Act 1992.
Under section 12(1) of the PID Act, principal officers must appoint one or more officers or employees of the agency as responsible officers. This requirement must be met within three months of the Act’s commencement.
