Kangaroo Island Celebrates Resilience and Excellence at the 2025 Australia Day Event

The Kangaroo Island Council proudly recognised the extraordinary contributions of its community at this year’s 2025 Australia Day Event. The ceremony highlighted individuals and initiatives that have profoundly shaped and strengthened the Island’s community spirit.

Adding to the significance of the occasion, last year’s Citizen of the Year recipients, Kate Stanton and members of Bryon Buick’s family, including his sisters Sandy Howard and Merridy McIntee, had the honour of presenting this year’s awards. Bryon, a highly respected community member, was recognised posthumously, making this moment a heartfelt tribute to his legacy.

Joint Citizens of the Year – Kerry Brinkley and Dianne Hoffman

Two remarkable individuals, Kerry Brinkley and Dianne Hoffman, were named Joint Citizens of the Year, acknowledging their outstanding dedication to the Kangaroo Island community.

Kerry Brinkley, a passionate supporter of local sports, has devoted countless hours to fostering community engagement through activities such as his leadership with the Kangaroo Island Racing Club. His contributions have helped sustain and grow sporting opportunities on the Island.

Dianne Hoffman, through her role as a leader of the KI Cancer Support Group, has made a significant difference in the lives of those facing cancer, providing support, guidance, and hope to families during difficult times.

Both Kerry and Dianne expressed their gratitude to their families, friends, and the broader community for their encouragement and support throughout their journeys.

Event of the Year – Western Districts Memorial Community and Sports Centre Opening

The Western Districts Memorial Community and Sports Centre Opening was recognised as Event of the Year, a poignant moment of both celebration and reflection.

The original centre, a beloved cornerstone of the Western Districts community, was tragically lost during the devastating 2020 bushfires. Its reopening marked not only the culmination of a collective effort to rebuild but also a testament to the community’s resilience and determination to move forward together.

Accepting the award on behalf of the Western Districts community, Greg Bald reflected on the significance of the new centre. He acknowledged the deep loss of the original building while celebrating the centre’s renewed purpose as a hub for sports, gatherings, and connection.

Project of the Year – Drive Alive Road Safety Campaign

The Drive Alive Road Safety Campaign, spearheaded by Priscilla Thomas and students from Kangaroo Island Community Education (KICE) – Parndana Campus, received the Project of the Year award. The campaign’s focus on responsible driving has encouraged positive behavioural changes and raised awareness about road safety across the Island.

During the ceremony, Chloe Florance, joined by Priscilla Thomas, spoke about the campaign’s impact and how it has inspired the community to prioritise safety on the roads.

Mayor Michael Pengilly praised all recipients for their dedication to making Kangaroo Island a better place. "These awards celebrate the people who give so much to our community, often without seeking recognition. Kerry and Dianne’s contributions show the impact that individuals can have, while the Western Districts Centre and Drive Alive Campaign demonstrate the power of community spirit. This event is about honouring those who make a difference, and I thank each and every one of them for their hard work and commitment."

The Council congratulates all award recipients and extends its gratitude to those who continue to contribute to the strength and vitality of the Kangaroo Island community.
