PUBLIC UPDATE

Kingscote Tidal Pool – Water Quality

Kangaroo Island Council is aware of recent community concerns following reports of a toxic microalgae bloom along the Fleurieu Peninsula coastline.

On 25 March, the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) confirmed the presence of Karenia mikimotoi, a naturally occurring microalgae known to affect marine life and, in some cases, cause mild health symptoms in people. These may include skin rashes, eye or respiratory irritation, or stomach upset if ingested.

PIRSA has advised KI Council that “Water samples have been collected for analysis with results confirming low levels of Karenia mikimotoi around Kangaroo Island”.

Water quality in ocean environments, including the Kingscote Tidal Pool, can vary due to tides, temperature, rainfall and other environmental factors. While there is no evidence of any dangerous risk at this time, individuals are encouraged to assess their own health and comfort levels before entering the water.

Advice for swimmers:

  • Avoid swimming in discoloured or unusual-looking water. If you do enter the water, take care to wash in clean water afterwards.
  • Take extra care if you have sensitive skin, respiratory conditions, or a weakened immune system.
  • Monitor updates from the EPA and SA Health.

Council will continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates if further information becomes available.
