Algal bloom affecting coastal areas — what you need to know!

Council will continue to monitor the situation and share any updates provided by SA Health as they become available.

A naturally occurring algal bloom is currently affecting parts of the Fleurieu Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula and Kangaroo Island. With increased coastal activity expected over Easter and the school holidays, community members are encouraged to stay informed and follow safety advice.

Key health advice

  • Avoid swimming in discoloured or foamy water
  • Avoid walking on the beach if you are experiencing symptoms such as:
    • Skin or eye irritation
    • Coughing or shortness of breath
  • If symptoms occur, stay indoors with windows closed until they pass
  • Seek medical attention if symptoms persist or worsen

Marine life impacts

  • Do not eat dead or dying fish or cockles
  • Report marine deaths to FISHWATCH on 1800 065 522
  • Commercially harvested pipis are safe and not impacted

What’s causing the bloom?

The bloom is associated with ongoing marine heatwave conditions, with water temperatures approximately 2.5°C above average, and calm seas. These blooms are unpredictable and can persist until strong westerly winds return — usually around late April.

The algae (Karenia mikimotoi) does not produce long-term health effects but can cause short-term irritation.
