Celebrating Our Youth – Joshua Gaton Named Young Achiever of the Year

Published 15th July 2026

Kangaroo Island Council is proud to announce Joshua Gaton as the 2026 Young Achiever of the Year, in
recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Island community.

Joshua Gaton impressed elected members with his resilience, leadership and community concern in recognising
loneliness and social disconnection across Kangaroo Island. Whether volunteering his time, as a leader in the
Stronger Together imitative, or leading by example among his peers, Joshua’s commitment to making a
difference was clear. He will receive a $150 prize in recognition of his award.

Mayor Pengilly noted "Joshua demonstrates exceptional leadership, unwavering resilience, and a deep
compassion for others. This young leader has become a pillar of strength in our community, proving that true
achievement is not just about personal success, but about how many people you uplift along the way. Joshua’s
kindness and vision for a better future perfectly embody the spirit of Kangaroo Island and the Young Achiever of
the Year Award."

Also acknowledged through a Mayor’s Recognition Award for Sporting Excellence was Georgie Horjus, whose
positive impact to the sport of netball, and inspiring leadership and encouragement to those dreaming of
following in her footsteps is significant. Georgie is an outstanding role model for the youth of Kangaroo Island.

This year, Council received strong and compelling nominations for the Young Achiever of the Year Award, each
highlighting the remarkable efforts of young Islanders across a range of fields. While only one recipient and one
recognition award were awarded, it was a difficult decision given the calibre of nominees. Council extends its
sincere thanks and congratulations to all those nominated for the positive impact they are making in their
communities.

The awards will be presented as part of this year’s Settlement Day ceremony on Monday, 27 July 2026, with
the community warmly invited to attend the following events:

10:30am – Settlement Day Ceremony
Pioneers Memorial, Kingscote Esplanade

  • Guest speaker Mr Mike Golder
  • Presentation of the Young Achiever of the Year Award and Mayor’s Recognition Award for
    Sporting Excellence

This annual event commemorates the arrival of South Australia’s first free settlers and honours the pioneering
spirit that continues to shape the Island today. It's also a time to celebrate the next generation of leaders who are
already making a mark.

“The Young Achiever Award is one of the most meaningful honours we can give,” said Mayor Michael Pengilly. “It shines a light on the next generation of leaders who already demonstrate the values that make our Island
community so special. Joshua and Georgie should be incredibly proud.”

All welcome!

Please note that if there is inclement weather on the day, Settlement Day commemorations will be moved in
doors to the Town Hall.
