Kangaroo Island Council Passes Rescission Motion and Adopts New Acknowledgement Statement
The Kangaroo Island Council has officially rescinded a previous motion from December 2022. This decision was made during the most recent council meeting, where a majority vote favoured a new approach to acknowledging the rich history of the Island.
A new statement has been adopted by a majority, which reads:
"That Council acknowledge and recognises spiritual significance of our Island to Indigenous Australians and all peoples who have come before us to settle on our Island. Whose toil and efforts down through the years have made it our Island home that it is today." This motion was carried and will be included in the October 2024 Council Meeting official minutes (Minute: OM456:2024).
Mayor Michael Pengilly stated, “The Council, by majority, wanted to pass a statement that recognises all those who have settled on Kangaroo Island over the millennia and acknowledges their contributions that have shaped our home.”
