Kangaroo Island Art Society 30 year Retrospective
Kangaroo Island has a record number of residents who have long established art practices or produce quality crafted pottery, timber, glass, jewellery and textiles. Many who locate to the island are drawn by the support available to artisans from their peers and from two incorporated member arts groups. Some create for personal satisfaction, others to support their incomes, but undoubtedly the community is richer for their contribution.
Thirty years ago when the Kangaroo Island Art Society opened its Murray Street gallery in Kingscote there were few outlets on the island where you could view or purchase artwork. Since 1988 more than 200 residents have joined the Art Society as exhibiting members, some of them going on to wider acclaim, with their works held in national collections. The gallery has operated continuously throughout this time, won an SA Great Regional Award for community contribution, held annual exhibitions including Year 12 art offerings, run workshops and participated in community projects to diversify skills, and encouraged local residents to participate in art activities for the very first time.
Kangaroo Island Council is proud to support and promote local artists by convening a special members 1988 – 2018 survey exhibition at the Kangaroo Island Airport.
“KI Art Society 30 year Retrospective” is a curated exhibition, the fourth presentation since the Airport was upgraded, and is an opportunity to view some island history and reconnect with fondly remembered artworks from the island’s many creative people. Founding, life and current members are represented. Some artworks are on loan and not for sale, some are from artists no longer with us, and a considerable number are available for purchase.
